Ratios & Private Trackers

Understanding and managing your upload/download ratio is essential for staying in good standing on private trackers.

What Is Ratio?

Your ratio is your total uploaded bytes divided by your total downloaded bytes:

ratio = total_uploaded / total_downloaded

A ratio of 1.0 means you've uploaded exactly as much as you've downloaded. Most private trackers require a minimum ratio of 0.5–1.0 to keep your account in good standing.

Ratio Classes

Many trackers use a tiered class system that grants privileges based on ratio and total upload:

Class	Typical Requirement	Benefit
User	0.4+ ratio	Basic access
Power User	0.6+ ratio + 25 GB upload	More invite capacity
Elite	1.0+ ratio + 100 GB upload	More invites, access to special forums

Building Ratio

Seed New Uploads First

New uploads have few seeders and high demand. If you seed in the first few hours after a new release, you'll upload a lot before the swarm fills with other seeders.

Freeleech Torrents

During freeleech events (tracker-wide or per-torrent), downloads don't count against your ratio. Grab as much as you can during these periods.

Bonus Points

Most trackers award bonus points (BP) for seeding time. Points can be exchanged for upload credit in the tracker's shop. Seed old, obscure torrents continuously to accumulate points faster.

Upload Original Content

If you have access to quality content (personal rips, rare recordings), uploading it earns significant upload credit.

Hit and Runs (H&R)

A hit and run is when you download a torrent and stop seeding before reaching the tracker's minimum seeding requirement (e.g., 72 hours, or until you hit a 1.0 ratio on that torrent).

H&Rs are tracked per-torrent. Accumulate too many and your account is warned, then disabled.

How to avoid H&Rs: Leave your torrent client running after a download completes. Set minimum seeding time in qBittorrent under Tools → Options → BitTorrent → Seeding Goals.

1. Use a seedbox — see Seedboxes — for fast, always-on seeding
2. Focus on snatching new uploads — better ratio per torrent when demand is high
3. Don't download more than you can seed — queue discipline matters
4. Monitor your H&R count regularly — most trackers show it in your profile
5. Participate in freeleech events — follow the tracker's announcements forum or Discord
